A lot of New Zealand's best motor sport drivers start in go karts. New Zealand has liberal laws governing the age at which drivers may compete in motor sport events. Be it on two wheels or four wheels All over the country kids are putting on their helmets,gloves and boots, revving their engines and their off. It is not unusual to see children as young as six years competing with their peers in organized events. Many classes of karts run from juniors age six upwards running restricted engines, older race drivers also run KT100 Yamaha engined karts having been the mainstay of New Zealand go kart racing for many years then the more powerful Rotax series electric start and running 125cc these karts really move along. Then a step up to the open class racing were engines in excess of 250cc are mated with a light weight go kart to allow very high speed performance. For many Kiwis and their guests New Zealand has a large number of forest tracks, beaches and open areas that allow unrestricted speed with the right type of vehicle. Most indoor tracks are open to the public, Small low power go karts are rented on a time or by the race basis, these indoor karts are not governed by the same safety standards as their race breed cousins, But they allow many more people, New Zealanders and visitors to our lovely country, to experience the thrill of racing, burning rubber fumes and noise all add to the feeling your there your doing it.
